At Signature, we have recently encountered concerning levels of carbon monoxide (CO) in homes across the Albuquerque area. Our ambient air testing has revealed CO levels ranging from 10 to 50 parts per million (ppm), which can pose serious health risks over time.
In our recent interview with Dr. Brandon Warrick, one of only two board-certified practicing medical toxicologists in the state of New Mexico and the Associate Medical Director of the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center, emphasized that a carbon monoxide (CO) level above 10 parts per million in a home is a concern. Dr. Warrick states that he would not feel safe in his own home with CO levels exceeding 10 parts per million.
Dr. Warrick further notes that New Mexico’s higher altitude likely increases the health risks associated with carbon monoxide exposure due to the lower oxygen levels. He points out that carbon monoxide has a cumulative effect in the body—if someone spends long hours in a home with elevated CO levels, the gas does not fully leave their system, leading to a continuous buildup over time.
Additionally, Dr. Warrick highlights that certain groups, such as children and pregnant women, are at high risk from CO. Developing bodies and fetal development are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of CO, which can lead to long-term health complications.
Dr. Warrick, the EPA, and the World Health Organization, all recommend that a licensed contractor or qualified professional should be consulted for carbon monoxide levels above 10 parts per million,to ensure the safety and well-being of the household.
At Signature, we use ambient air digital readers to provide real-time, accurate CO level readings that reflect what people are actually breathing. Unfortunately, some contractors use improper equipment, such as combustion analyzers meant for testing exhaust gases, or standard home CO detectors that only alarm at emergency levels of 50 to 70 ppm, often with delayed response times that can prolong exposure risks.
If you have concerns about your furnace emitting carbon monoxide, we recommend scheduling a professional furnace tune-up with a licensed contractor who utilizes accurate ambient air digital readers. Your safety is our top priority.
At Signature, we understand that CO warnings can be alarming to homeowners. Our goal is not to upsell services but to uphold the highest standards of safety for our customers and the Albuquerque community. When we detect elevated CO levels, we follow a strict protocol to ensure accuracy and reliability:
