Heat pumps and mini-splits have gained a lot of publicity over the last few years, maybe you have questions on whether a heat pump is right for you. At Signature, we will happily answer all of your questions with a free in-home estimate. We have been installing heat pumps in New Mexico for over 7 years and are very familiar with the pros, cons, and how to design a system that is optimal for you, your home, and your family
A heat pump is a versatile HVAC system that serves dual purposes: heating and cooling. Unlike traditional heating systems that generate heat by burning fuel, a heat pump transfers heat from one place to another, utilizing electricity as its power source.
During colder months, the heat pump extracts heat from the outside air or ground and transfers it indoors to warm up your home. Even when outdoor temperatures are low, there is still heat energy available for the heat pump to capture. This process is highly energy-efficient, as it doesn’t rely on burning fuel to create heat.
That depends on your preferences. We will discuss some important things you should know about installing a heat pump or mini-split on this page. Additionally, we provide free in-home estimates where we can delve into any of your questions about heat pumps/mini-splits in general, and anything that relates to having one of these systems installed or operating at your home.
Not all homeowners have the space required for ductwork installation when adding heating and cooling to their home.
If you are looking for a solution to convert from swamp coolers to AC but have no ductwork and don’t want any or have the space for any in your home, a ductless mini-split, which is a heat pump, can be a great option. Additionally, to heat and cool single rooms like an enclosed porch, converted garage, or an addition, mini-splits can be a great option
Are you considering installing a heat pump HVAC system in your New Mexico home? With the extreme temperatures in the state, it’s important to have a reliable and efficient climate control system. A heat pump HVAC system can provide both heating and cooling, making it a popular choice for homeowners in New Mexico. On this page, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about installing a heat pump HVAC system in New Mexico.
A heat pump HVAC system is a type of heating and cooling system that uses a heat exchange process to transfer heat from one location to another. It works by extracting heat from the air outside and transferring it inside to heat your home. In the summer, the process is reversed, and the heat pump removes heat from inside your home and transfers it outside, providing cooling.
A Ductless Split System can be one of the less expensive options to add cooling and heating to a home or room when adding ductwork is too expensive or impossible. Ductless systems use an outdoor compressor unit just like an AC but they don’t use ductwork.
They are mounted directly on the wall in the room you are wanting to heat and cool.
The main benefit of installing a Ductless System is the ability to control temperatures in individual rooms of your home. Each zone (air handler) has its own thermostat allowing you to cool or heat a room only when it’s occupied. Saving you money on energy bills!!
No longer will it be necessary to install those clunky window air conditioners that will cost you more in energy bills just to cool one room. Call Signature Heating, Cooling & Plumbing now and ask about our special offers on new installations.

There are several benefits to installing a heat pump HVAC system in your New Mexico home, including:
As mentioned, a heat pump HVAC system can provide both heating and cooling, making it a versatile and convenient option for homeowners.
Heat pumps use filters to remove dust, allergens, and other pollutants from the air, resulting in improved air quality in your home.
Before installing a heat pump HVAC system in your New Mexico home, there are a few factors you should consider.
While heat pumps are suitable for most climates, they are most efficient in moderate climates. New Mexico has a dry, desert climate, making it an ideal location for a heat pump HVAC system.
The size of your home will determine the size and capacity of the heat pump you need. A Signature Comfort advisor can help you determine the right size for your home.
If your home already has ductwork, it can be used for a heat pump HVAC system. However, if your home doesn't have ductwork, we’ll need to install it, unless you are looking at mini-splits which don’t require ductwork.
The cost of installing a heat pump HVAC system can vary depending on factors such as the size of your home, your preferences, the type of heat pump, the brand or equipment, and any additional installation requirements. Signature provides multiple options for you to choose from.
There are three main types of heat pump HVAC systems: air-source, ground-source, and ductless mini-split.
An air-source heat pump is the most common type of heat pump HVAC system. It works by extracting heat from the air outside and transferring it inside. It's a cost-effective option and is suitable for most homes in New Mexico.
A ground-source heat pump, also known as a geothermal heat pump, uses the constant temperature of the ground to heat and cool your home. It's a more expensive option, but it's also more energy-efficient and can provide significant cost savings in the long run. Although these can be great systems, they require a good amount of land and Signature does not install them.
A ductless mini-split heat pump is a good option for homes without existing ductwork. It consists of an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units that are mounted on the wall. It's a versatile option as each indoor unit can be controlled separately, allowing for zoned heating and cooling.
Installing a heat pump HVAC system is a complex process that can be done by our experienced and professional heat pump installation teams in a day or two. Here’s an overview of the installation process
The first step in the installation process is to assess your home’s heating and cooling needs. A professional Signature advisor will consider factors such as the size of your home, the climate, and your budget to determine the best heat pump HVAC system for your home.
If your home doesn’t have existing ductwork for a split system heat pump and not a mini-split, it will need to be installed. This involves running ducts throughout your home and connecting them to the heat pump. Fortunately, Signature installs ductwork too!
The outdoor unit of the heat pump will be installed on a concrete or UV protective pad outside your home. It’s essential to ensure that the unit is level and secure.
If you’re installing a ductless mini-split heat pump, the indoor units will be mounted on the wall in each room. For other types of heat pumps, the indoor unit will be connected to the ductwork
The HVAC technician will make the necessary electrical and refrigerant connections to ensure the heat pump is functioning correctly. Many older homes in the Albuquerque area have dated electrical panels that will not support a new heat pump system. Fortunately, Signature has an in-house electrical contractor who can assess the electrical needs of your home and unit and provide options, including a new electrical panel upgrade done at a discount with the heat pump installation.
Once the installation is complete, our experienced installation team will test the heat pump and inspect it to ensure everything is working correctly.
To ensure your heat pump HVAC system continues to function efficiently, it’s essential to perform regular maintenance and care. Here are a few tips
Change the air filters regularly to ensure proper airflow and improve air quality.
Keep the outdoor unit free of debris and vegetation to ensure proper airflow.
Schedule annual maintenance with a professional HVAC technician to check for any issues and perform necessary repairs.
